Songs By Request: Lost Without Her

Bryan Schardt is a soldier far away from his family right now.  He reached out to me and asked if I’d write a Valentines Day song for his wife Lesha.  I asked him to share some stories with me about his wife and he unloaded some great details.  So I give you, Lost Without Her.  Happy Valentines Day Lesha and Bryan.  Hope you love the song!

Stupid Love #songsbyrequest

Back when my wife and I were dating, we lived in a town called Laie.  We were both going to college at Brigham Young University – Hawaii.  She played softball for the school and I played in my band Upstanding Youth.  We met, fell in love, and couldn’t spend more than 8 hours apart for sleep.  We were constantly together after we started falling in love.

malaekahanaLiving in Hawaii, you have more than your fair share of romantic and beautiful locations.  Our favorite spot used to be a grassy hill at a beach park called Malaekahana.  Late at night when the gate would be locked, we’d park my truck off the side of Kamehameha Highway and take the long dark walk to the hill...

#songsbyrequest Angel Cordero shared a memorable story of how he met and married his wife.  A great story that includes a marriage proposal at 32,000 feet.  Thanks for sharing your story with me Angel!  In response to his story, I wrote the following song called Esperar.  Watch the video to hear the rest of the story and the song I wrote!

Songs By Request: Dad, He’ll Fish You

#songsbyrequest Andy Hatch shared some great stories with me about when his dad had to fish him out of some messy situations. Like the time Andy fell into the sewer and his dad literally tried to fish Andy out with a fishing pole. I think a lot of people can relate to a time when their dad had to “fish” them out of a problem.  So I wrote this song for him Dad, He’ll Fish You.

Songs By Request: Your Heart Beat Saved Me

I don’t think I’ve ever wrestled over the lyrics of a song like I did with this one.  In this song I share the story of Kirstin Reed who lost her daughter 7 days after she was born.  This was one of the most emotionally difficult songs for me to write and it was such an honor to have Kirstin trust me with her story.

Songs By Request

On 9 Jan I offered on Facebook, for the first time, to write a song for anyone if they’d share something personal with me.  The responses were amazing and kind of overwhelming.  I read them all and many of them were hilarious.  I picked one that resonated with me and wrote a song called You’re Failure Makes Me Happy  and you can download it for free here.

But the requests kept coming! I’m so honored and impressed that people would share such personal stories with me.  The following day a friend asked me to write a song for her husband’s 30th birthday.  I wrote You’re Tired, You’re Old and you can download that one here.  Again, the amount of details friends shared with me were hilarious and surprising.

Today was a rough day.

Today was a rough day.

All of this makes me ridiculously happy right now...

Songs By Request: You’re Tired, You’re Old

I told my friends on Facebook the other day that if they shared something personal with me I’d write a song about it.  My first attempt got more attention than I anticipated when I wrote Your Failure Makes Me Happy.  It’s a song about a high school teacher who has a lot of fun with the tests she makes for her students.

The next day another friend messaged me.  She asked if I’d write a song to tease her husband who is turning 30.  Her husband often teases her because she’s a few years older, but now he’s turning 30 so he’s entered the “old” club.

I came up with the song, You’re Tired, You’re Old from the stories she shared with me.  The song is available for free download below.

Songs By Request: Your Failure Makes Me Happy

I asked a question today to my friends on Facebook.

SongByRequest

A lot of people responded.  A friend of mine from college, Brandi Oveson, had a cool request.  She has a story about how she makes up funny multiple choice answers.  I thought that was funny and came up with a tune I’m calling, Your Failure Makes Me Happy.  Watch, like, and share 🙂
