Sandy Hook and Knit the Broken Hearts

I wrote previously here about how the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary affected me.  I think a lot of it had to do with the age of my kids at the time.  I had a heightened sensitivity to violence against children because I had a child the same age as those who were killed.

Since then I’ve reluctantly followed the information that’s been released and arguments about gun control.  I’ve felt impressed to contribute positively to the conversation as best as I could, so I wrote a song.

I thought about a metaphor where we liken children to plants and parents are like farmers.  We guard and tend and plant as best we can and we hope our efforts result in a tall tree or good fruit of some kind.  But when our labor is taken from us and our best efforts gone, it’s really hard to pick yourself back up.  Especially with so much anger surrounding the subject.  Or better said…

“When your life and love are stolen and all you’ve worked for now is gone, no amount of anger, hate, or despair, will knit the broken hearts.  Only love will knit the broken hearts.”

I compare the shooting at Sandy Hook to a giant storm that a farmer didn’t see coming.  The farmer lost “20 seeds and 7 trees” just like we lost 20 children and 7 adults that day.  We all lost so much that day.  And no amount of arguing or legislation will change what’s at the root of all the gun violence in the United States right now.  As cliche as it sounds, it’s totally true.  “Only love will knit the broken hearts.”
