New Services: #songsbyrequest, #songsondemand, Jingles, and Consulting

Today is a huge day for me.  While I continue to work a 9-5, it’s clear that I have other talents that I need to be sharing and ways that I can serve people.  More importantly, I feel a huge need to do this.  I told a friend the other day who had a slight breakdown at work that she needed to start considering building her own business because she has so much to offer.  I asked her, “how long are you going to make the rest of us wait until you start sharing the best of you?”  I feel like I need to take my own advice there.

Today I’m beginning to offer my musical services to the world...

Sandy Hook and Knit the Broken Hearts

I wrote previously here about how the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary affected me.  I think a lot of it had to do with the age of my kids at the time.  I had a heightened sensitivity to violence against children because I had a child the same age as those who were killed.

Since then I’ve reluctantly followed the information that’s been released and arguments about gun control.  I’ve felt impressed to contribute positively to the conversation as best as I could, so I wrote a song.

I thought about a metaphor where we liken children to plants and parents are like farmers.  We guard and tend and plant as best we can and we hope our efforts result in a tall tree or good fruit of some kind...

Songs By Request: Esperar (To Wait For)

#songsbyrequest Angel Cordero shared a memorable story of how he met and married his wife.  A great story that includes a marriage proposal at 32,000 feet.  Thanks for sharing your story with me Angel!  In response to his story, I wrote the following song called Esperar.  Watch the video to hear the rest of the story and the song I wrote!

Songs By Request: Dad, He’ll Fish You

#songsbyrequest Andy Hatch shared some great stories with me about when his dad had to fish him out of some messy situations. Like the time Andy fell into the sewer and his dad literally tried to fish Andy out with a fishing pole. I think a lot of people can relate to a time when their dad had to “fish” them out of a problem.  So I wrote this song for him Dad, He’ll Fish You.

Songs By Request: Your Heart Beat Saved Me

I don’t think I’ve ever wrestled over the lyrics of a song like I did with this one.  In this song I share the story of Kirstin Reed who lost her daughter 7 days after she was born.  This was one of the most emotionally difficult songs for me to write and it was such an honor to have Kirstin trust me with her story.

Songs By Request

On 9 Jan I offered on Facebook, for the first time, to write a song for anyone if they’d share something personal with me.  The responses were amazing and kind of overwhelming.  I read them all and many of them were hilarious.  I picked one that resonated with me and wrote a song called You’re Failure Makes Me Happy  and you can download it for free here.

But the requests kept coming! I’m so honored and impressed that people would share such personal stories with me.  The following day a friend asked me to write a song for her husband’s 30th birthday.  I wrote You’re Tired, You’re Old and you can download that one here.  Again, the amount of details friends shared with me were hilarious and surprising.

Today was a rough day.

Today was a rough day.

All of this makes me ridiculously happy right now...

Songs By Request: You’re Tired, You’re Old

I told my friends on Facebook the other day that if they shared something personal with me I’d write a song about it.  My first attempt got more attention than I anticipated when I wrote Your Failure Makes Me Happy.  It’s a song about a high school teacher who has a lot of fun with the tests she makes for her students.

The next day another friend messaged me.  She asked if I’d write a song to tease her husband who is turning 30.  Her husband often teases her because she’s a few years older, but now he’s turning 30 so he’s entered the “old” club.

I came up with the song, You’re Tired, You’re Old from the stories she shared with me.  The song is available for free download below.

Songs By Request: Your Failure Makes Me Happy

I asked a question today to my friends on Facebook.

SongByRequest

A lot of people responded.  A friend of mine from college, Brandi Oveson, had a cool request.  She has a story about how she makes up funny multiple choice answers.  I thought that was funny and came up with a tune I’m calling, Your Failure Makes Me Happy.  Watch, like, and share 🙂

Twitter Followers Hack

The Twitter Followers Hack Isn’t What You Think It Should Be

When I started blogging last year I wanted to use every social media platform as best as I could so I could reach as many readers as possible.  I created a Facebook page, an Instagram account, and revived my old twitter account.  I believed, as most people who are invested in building an audience on social media do, that my focus needed to be gaining as many likes and followers as possible to increase my readership and provide as much value to the widest audience as possible.
I’ve since learned that this approach is faulty and the opposite is true.  While we’re all looking for the golden twitter hack to give us the largest audience, the reality is that we need to focus more on creating deep relationships instead of trying to...

11 Things I Learned From Blogging

I’ve Met My Goal, Time For Change

Around April-May of 2013 I made a goal.  I wanted to see what would happen if I consistently posted something on my blog, every week, and really dedicated myself to building up my blog for 6 months.  I’ve met my goal, and not it’s time for a change.  But before that, here’s a bit about what my experience has been over the past 6 months.

I first decided on a very specific and consistent format for the posts that I thought would give readers the most value (twitter summary, principle, make a connection, and so what) and I stuck to it.  To sustain this format I’d prepare blog posts topics a month in advance and have to put in ridiculous amounts of preparation to maintain a consistent flow...
