Original Song: Dance With Me

Last year I spent a lot of time recording little snippets of songs ideas and riffs on my iPhone.  I didn’t really have the workspace or make the time to really work on them, but I decided to finish one of them recently and so below I give you my new song, Dance With Me.

Background

Growing up a teenager in the 90s, I was into the band Stone Temple Pilots (STP).  Their song Plush has a killer intro and if you play the riff a little quicker, it sounds like a common Hawaiian Hula-type riff intro.  I originally learned the STP version and one day while fooling around started playing it faster and my buddy and sax player from Upstanding Youth, Tim Goshi, started horsing around pretending to do a hula.

So I’ve always had this fun little riff in the back of my head for years and finally put it to some chords last year.  It was a special riff for me because it connected me to Hawaii even though I had just moved to Maryland.  Memories of luaus, friends dancing all through high school, as well as watching my wife and daughter hula all are a part of what this song means.

I love listening to old original iPhone recordings I did because you can hear the fun voices of my family in the background and see where melodies came from and how ideas developed.  I used to love listening to old demos of the ska/punk band Sublime back in the 90s also because I could see how the lead singer developed ideas and felt like I could be just like him one day.

Below I want to share the song in it’s entirety, that you can download for free, and finally a YouTube teaser video of just a portion of the song.  As you listen I want you to think of one or two people who you think would enjoy hearing this song and share this post with them.  Hope you feel like dancing!
