How To Be Original by John Locke

Seth Godin, a popular author and blogger, recently wrote, “Just about every successful initiative and project starts from a place of replication. The chances of being fundamentally out of the box over the top omg original are close to being zero.”  This reminded me of four things that seem unrelated, but I promise they are: John Locke’s definition of private property; my family trip to Palmyra, New York; the Foo Fighters newest album; and Sting’s new Broadway production.  They’ve all taught me that being original isn’t about creating something from nothing, it has something to do with what John Lock said about private property many years ago.

Music Binds Us Together

I woke up this morning and saw two people had donated to my Kickstarter project while I slept. One of the donors was an old friend from my Kahuku High School days.  For some reason this caused me to do some deep reflection about how music binds us together in unique and meaningful relationships.

This Kickstarter project has been incredible because it’s put me back in touch with people I haven’t talked to or thought about in years. Because of that, it’s shown me that the impact I’ve had on people musically is much greater than I thought.  I sat for a while this morning and thought about the memories my classmate must have of my music. As I played a slide show of memories in my mind I was impressed with the following idea: music shared from the...

How To Win Personalized Rewards – Help My Kickstarer!

acousticSince I’ve recently moved from Hawaii to Virginia and I’ve started to get my first solo gig offers! The problem is, I can’t do these gigs without a PA system!  My Kickstarter project is an effort to get me ready in the next 14 days for my first big solo gigs.  In other words, help me be heard!

This coming June, I’ve been asked to play a 3hr gig in Culpeper, VA at a bar called The Pier as well as a networking event in Washington, DC at the Graham Hotel.  These are amazing new opportunities for me as a solo singer/songwriter, but I can’t do this without your help.  Without a PA system I won’t be able to do these shows!!  All donations will go towards purchasing a Bose L1 S1 PA system.

Learn more and see the great rewards I’m offering (like writing you a song, a handwritten thank you l...

What is this I hear about a free streaming concert, me choosing the songs you’ll play, and the 3P?

I’m going to stream a live acoustic performance from my home studio in Virginia and you’ll get to pick the songs I play!  You’ll be choosing from some of my original tunes, some of my favorite cover songs, and a bunch of songs from my glory days in Upstanding Youth.

  1. Everyone who signs up below will have a cha...

Vintage Store Horseshoes and Hand Grenades and a Jingle

Back Story

On Valentines Day this year, my wife Echo and I went to Fredericksburg, VA on a date.  We made a reservation at some slick back alley foodie restaurant and then went for a walk while we waited.  Fredericksburg is an amazing old town with great American history.  The founding fathers would spend time in this town discussing the future of the country while drinking at a local tavern, wars were fought here, and every store claims to have a belt buckle worn by a Civil War soldier.  Imagine a million antique stores on every corner, with Civil War re-enactment-type people running the store, and you have a general picture of downtown Fredericksburg.  I love it.

New Services: #songsbyrequest, #songsondemand, Jingles, and Consulting

Today is a huge day for me.  While I continue to work a 9-5, it’s clear that I have other talents that I need to be sharing and ways that I can serve people.  More importantly, I feel a huge need to do this.  I told a friend the other day who had a slight breakdown at work that she needed to start considering building her own business because she has so much to offer.  I asked her, “how long are you going to make the rest of us wait until you start sharing the best of you?”  I feel like I need to take my own advice there.

Today I’m beginning to offer my musical services to the world...

Sandy Hook and Knit the Broken Hearts

I wrote previously here about how the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary affected me.  I think a lot of it had to do with the age of my kids at the time.  I had a heightened sensitivity to violence against children because I had a child the same age as those who were killed.

Since then I’ve reluctantly followed the information that’s been released and arguments about gun control.  I’ve felt impressed to contribute positively to the conversation as best as I could, so I wrote a song.

I thought about a metaphor where we liken children to plants and parents are like farmers.  We guard and tend and plant as best we can and we hope our efforts result in a tall tree or good fruit of some kind...

New Music by Upstanding Youth on iTunes

New Music on iTunes.

New Music on iTunes.

My band Upstanding Youth released new music, our project we called Burn The Process: 3P One, on iTunes a few weeks ago.  While this music was actually available some time ago, it just recently that it’s become available on iTunes.  I’m proud of this project, just like I am of all Upstanding Youth projects and wanted to share it with you.

What’s unique about 3P One is that we were able to have one of the tracks on the project, BRS, as part of a Jaseboards skateboards YouTube video – and that video has had over 1.5 million views as of this writing!  I’m so stoked we were able to help Jaseboards with their project and that both have been so successful.

Not only is partnering with Jaseboards unique for this project, but we also took one of our older songs, MTW, and rere...

Music Licensing Goals: Do You Need a Jingle?

Tools to help with my music licensing goals

I decided to put some serious music goals down during my recent time off from work.  I planned to give away three jingle-like branding songs to businesses that I like – for free!  I have 3 full albums and one EP under my belt and another EP on the way (see iTunes for Upstanding Youth) so I’ve had more than my fair share of the writing/recording/producing experience.  However,  even though I’ve written a ton of songs I’ve never made the jump into licensing because I just don’t know that side of the business.  So now that I have some time off, I’ve made some goals to change that.

Music Licensing Goals

I took my music licensing goals and reached out to three businesses: The Visual Art Institute of Salt Lake City, UT; Jaseboards; and Juiced Prod...

Lullaby: A Song to Soothe You

I was living in Argentina when I wrote the song Lullaby.  I think I had been listening to Silverchair at the time because I never play in dropped D tuning, like I do in this song.  But those were difficult days of walking the streets of Buenos Aires, asking  people to let me into their homes so I could share something I felt was extremely important.  It was a time of immense rejection and unbelievable accomplishment.  Either way, they were hard days with lots of walking.  So much walking that I burnt through 4 pairs of soles on my boots.

In order to wind down at the end of a physically and emotionally exhausting day I would often play this song.  It has no words and it’s technically a bit challenging because of the picking, but I think that’s what I love about it...
